The Passion Behind Fashion

With over 7 years of experience in the local fashion industry in Indonesia, Erika Winoto chose Humber College as her destination to pursue her education in Fashion Arts. Having worked in the industry back home, as well as teaching fashion at Esmod Fashion School in Indonesia, Erika had acquired the technical skills for working in fashion, but was in search for obtaining the business skills required for her career ambitions.

She came across Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning’s Fashion Arts program and saw that it had all that she was looking for- business, sourcing, merchandizing, manufacturing, window dressing, as well as sales and work ethics. Through her first semester studies, Erika not only gained hands on practical experience, but learned about how to succeed at sustaining the competitive nature of the fashion industry, all the while earning an Academic Honour’s standing of 90.50% GPA. Erika is currently completing her second semester of the four semester diploma program and finds that the strength of the program lies within the instructors.

These instructors are experienced individuals who have worked in the fashion industry and are reliable in relaying modern day knowledge and up-to-date information. With her strong background from Indonesia, along with the knowledge and skills obtained at Humber Institute, Erika looks forward to a career in “Trend Forecasting” where she will utilize her skills to pattern out what fashions will come the following year.

Erika Winoto is one of the many international students who have chosen to pursue fashion at Humber Institute. The four-semester Fashion Arts diploma program is only one of three fashion programs at Humber Institute. Humber also offers a four year Bachelor of Applied Business- Fashion Management degree, as well as a two semester post-graduate certificate program in Fashion Management and Promotions.

The Fashion Arts diploma focuses on retailing, marketing, and business aspects of the fashion industry. Students in this program have the opportunity to travel to New York for three days to showcase their work during New York Fashion Week. This provides a great chance to meet with big-name retailers like Clarins and FIT.

The Bachelor of Applied Business- Fashion Management degree option provides students an emphasis on Fashion and Business. With a degree, students can work towards managerial or directorial level jobs. Humber offers the degree option with a focus not only on fashion, but also on the commerce side of the industry, making Humber graduates highly qualified when entering the job market. After completion of the Fashion Arts diploma at Humber, students can go on to finish the Bachelor degree program by completing an additional 5 semesters with a paid work placement.

Bachelor degree graduates in any major may now also choose to further and broaden their education in the post-graduate Fashion Management and Promotions program. This program focuses on new product development, merchandising, marketing, trend forecasting, as well as branding, with graduating students who are prepared to work in the fast-changing fashion industry.

To apply to the Humber diploma and degree program, applicants must have completed high school and must show English proficiency scores. For the post-graduate program, applicants must have completed a Bachelor’s degree, along with English proficiency scores.

Humber houses its own Fashion Institute where students work together to create display cases and real-world mock-ups showcasing their own personal style and work. Students in the diploma program update display cases to reflect the seasonal change throughout the year. Degree students take over the Fashion Institute in the spring and learn courses in retail, branding, store planning, and marketing and management with a global perspective. Students are also selected to plan a fashion runway show, where they are fully responsible for planning, arranging, and organizing the whole event. The Fashion Institute has been quoted “the hub of the program” with an energetic atmosphere encouraging the exchange of ideas.

Many career opportunities lie within the fashion industry, locally, as well as globally.  Humber Institute produces qualified graduates with a high percentage receiving paid internships that may lead to full-time jobs after graduation. With a well-known reputation, Humber graduates have jobs as buyers, personal shoppers, model wardrobe assistants, merchandisers, event planners, wedding planners, and fashion bloggers. Jobs also have been given in public relations, media, journalism, and marketing, all related to fashion.
Students not only find jobs locally, some students go on to the Big Apple (New York City) to work at big name magazines like Elle Magazine. With job opportunities being offered to Humber graduates at places such as Aldo, Club Monaco, TJX, Harry Rosen, The Bay, Danier Leather, Brown Shoes, and Zellers, students who take initiative boast high levels of job satisfaction after completing any or all of Humber’s fashion programs. Join Humber, as it makes it mark in the ever-growing global fashion industry.

Becoming a part of the top 2% of universities

University rankings are a major decision making factor when choosing where to study. Naturally, as we look at all rankings, we perceive that higher ranked means better. This is not exactly the case, as there are many factors in the creation of a university rank.
Each ranking board, such as the Times Higher Education and QS World University rankings can provide different ranks as they would have slightly different assessment criteria. Some of the factors that are used for the creation of ranks are research quality, academic quality, academia quality and infrastructure.

Some scores are also generalized scores from all study areas, which may not directly relate to your intended course. For example, a university that is strong in all areas will be ranked higher than a university that is very strong in business but weaker overall. We believe that slight differences in rankings would not significantly change a student’s quality of teaching. However, we prefer to focus more on the overall position in the rankings. While we believe that a ranked 50 university is close to equal against a university ranked 100, the same does not apply to a ranked 50 university against a ranked 500 university. There are reasons why the higher ranked universities obtain that rank above its contemporaries. Also, the prestige obtained from a high ranked university will allow you, the potential degree holder to obtain employment easier. So, SUN Education Group proudly presents: The World Top 250 Prestigious Universities Expo!

Popular and Trendy Existed as far back as Ancient Greece

Believe it or not, popular and trendy are derived from ideas and thoughts deeply rooted from time. Popular is defined as “Liked, admired, or enjoyed by many people or by a particular person or group” while trendy is defined as “Very fashionable or up to date in style or influence”.
Popular is a derivative of population, specifically a group of the population and trendy is derived from trend, which is a general direction in which something is developing or changing. Though the words are different from the word today, the idea of popular and trendy has existed since the Ancient Greeks. All this culminates in the study of Demography.

Demography is the statistical study of human populations and sub-populations. It can be a very general science that can be applied to any kind of dynamic human population, that is, one that changes over time or space (see population dynamics). It encompasses the study of the size, structure, and distribution of these populations, and spatial and/or temporal changes in them in response to birth, migration, aging and death.

Demographic analysis can be applied to whole societies or to groups defined by criteria such as education, nationality, religion and ethnicity. Institutionally, demography is usually considered a field of sociology, though there are a number of independent demography departments. Formal demography limits its object of study to the measurement of populations processes, while the broader field of social demography population studies also analyze the relationships between economic, social, cultural and biological processes influencing a population. The term demographics refer to characteristics of a population.

Demography is today widely taught in many universities across the world, attracting students with initial training in social sciences, statistics or health studies. Being at the crossroads of several disciplines such as sociology, economics, epidemiology, geography, anthropology and history, demography offers tools to approach a large range of population issues by combining a more technical quantitative approach that represents the core of the discipline with many other methods borrowed from social or other sciences.
Demographic research is conducted in universities, in research institutes as well as in statistical departments and in several international agencies. The University of Southampton offers a degree in Social Sciences: Social Statistics & Demography. The University of Manchester offers a Sociology degree that allows for study in demography. Queen’s University of Belfast also has a degree in Sociology allowing further study into demography. Otherwise, the University of Warwick offers a degree in Sociology allowing specialism in research technique that will benefit you as a student of demography.

Career options are numerous. Commercial companies, local and national government all require employees with the skills and knowledge to understand and research the relationship between population, health, housing and policy. Local and overseas development and voluntary organisations are also increasingly employing people with expertise in population issues. Not all graduate careers are directly related to population studies, but the portfolio of transferable skills developed during your studies, including skills in computer proficiency, problem-solving, communication, numeracy, statistics and research methods, are all viewed extremely favourably by employers.

The Different Options of Post-secondary Education in Canada

As one of the top destinations to study, Canada hosts approximately 178,000 international students, creating a dynamic multi-cultural society where students, regardless of ethnic origin, feel at home in Canada. Toronto, the largest city in Canada, with a population of 2.48 million, is heralded as one of the most multicultural cities in the world.  Home to more than 100 distinct ethnic groups, Toronto attracts more visitors and immigrants than any other Canadian city. Although a new student might feel some anxiety coming to a new place, one can rest assured that Canadians are proud of their diversity and offer warmth and hospitality to residents and visitors.

In Canada, there are universities, as well as polytechnic institutes in which students can opt to pursue their post-secondary education. Both types of schools offer a variety of programs that can lead to degrees, certificates, and diplomas. The decision on which type of institution to attend involves research and knowing what the primary difference between universities and polytechnic institutes is.

Universities tend to offer programs leading to bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, or doctoral degrees. Class sizes tend to be larger, approximating from 50-200 students depending on the university and program of choice. Focus is placed highly on lecture-based learning, with optional co-op for specific programs. Applicants must meet higher admission requirements to directly enter into a university program. While this is an excellent option for those who have good academic standing in their secondary education, it may not be the best option for those who wish to upgrade their skills prior to pursuing a degree, or simply for those who wish to pursue a short-term program while gaining the same level of knowledge and experience as a university graduate.

For those applicants who may not wish to spend an additional 4 years in school and wish to acquire marketable skills to a specific career, then polytechnic institutions are the route to pursue. Polytechnic institutions not only offer 4 year degree programs, but also offer 2-3 year diploma programs, as well as 1-2 year post-graduate certificate programs. Post-graduate certificate programs are programs for those who want to pursue education after already having completed a Bachelor’s degree. Diploma programs offer two options for students. One option is to complete a diploma program to help upgrade marks for entrance into an advanced standing bachelor’s degree program. The other option is to directly enter the workforce with extensive hands-on experience and knowledge.

The primary difference between universities and polytechnic institutes is the hands-on classroom experience and close relationship with industry.  Industry advisors provide guidance on polytechnic institution’s academic programming; ensuring students learn the most relevant curriculum. The partnerships with the industry also provide work study, field placement, and internship opportunities for students. Polytechnic programs Message from the CEOfocus on the technical aspect of a field of study.
Class sizes are kept small, with an average of 20-40 students, allowing more one-on-one focus between students and teachers. Polytechnic institutes do not solely focus on lecture based learning; however feel that the best way a student can learn is to have hands-on access to the instruments they will be working with in the job force. With co-op and mandatory field placements, students are required to go out into the job market and actually gain work experience in their field of study. This allows students to be confident in their education upon graduation when entering the work force.

Canadian education is governed by each province. In Ontario, students have the option to complete a 2 or 3 year college diploma after graduation from high school, and then can transfer to an advanced standing in a degree program at a university. To qualify for post-secondary education in Ontario, one must be a high school graduate (completion of Grade 12/secondary school) or one can apply as a mature applicant if over the age of 19.  As an international applicant, most universities and polytechnic institutes look for a general grade point average of 60-70% in the required subjects based on program of choice.
If English is not the official language of the applicant’s home country, then IELTS or TOEFL exam scores will be required if choosing to enter directly into a post-secondary program. Humber Institutes of Technology and Advanced Learning, the biggest polytechnic institution in Canada, offers an English for Academic Purposes program for students who wish to study English prior to entering into a post-secondary program. This program helps students increase their level of English, verbal and written, to make them feel more prepared for their program of choice.

Studying in polytechnic institution in Canada provides an opportunity to gain prestigious education through well-rounded programs that reflect modern business and societal values. Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, located in Toronto, Ontario, is committed to ensuring a smooth transition and recognizes the value in learning beyond the classroom by providing hands-on education and work placements.

With Toronto being the nation’s largest employment centre, having 1/6 of Canada’s jobs, Humber offers a variety of programs to cover the wide ranges of interests reflected in today’s job market. Learning from accomplished and industry-connected faculty, students get applied training, hands-on skills, and real world experience. Imagine learning in a supportive academic environment where professors are approachable and classrooms reflect the cultural diversity of our land. Imagine entering the workforce with qualifications that are recognized and respected the world over. This is what it means to study in Canada.
